EU Provides €250,000 to Assist Victims of Severe Storm in Manipur

The European Union (EU) has stepped in to provide much-needed assistance to the victims of a severe storm that hit Manipur in early May. The EU has allocated €250,000 (over ₹2.26 crore) to help more than 1,500 vulnerable families affected by the hailstorm and heavy rain.

The aid, which will be delivered by the EU’s humanitarian partner, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), will focus on distributing food and emergency shelter kits to those most affected in the worst-hit areas. This support will help communities cope with the impact of the storm on their livelihoods and assist in restoring their damaged houses.

The storm, which struck on 5 May, caused extensive damage to over 48,000 houses, infrastructure projects, and agricultural lands across 16 districts in Manipur. The intense hailstorm, lasting 15 minutes with hailstones measuring four to five inches, led to major flooding in urban areas and widespread power outages.

The EU’s funding, provided through the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operation (ECHO) department of the European Commission, showcases European solidarity with those in need. The EU and its member states are known for being among the world’s leading donors of humanitarian aid, providing assistance to vulnerable populations affected by conflicts and disasters.

With its global network of field offices, the EU is committed to helping victims of crises and disasters, ensuring aid reaches those most in need based on humanitarian requirements. The assistance provided by the EU will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by the devastating storm in Manipur.
