Britain’s Labour Party excludes another left-winger from election, sparking outrage: Politics News

Labour Party Faces Backlash Over Deselection of Left-Winger Faiza Shaheen

Labour Party accused of conducting a purge of left-wingers as Faiza Shaheen deselected over social media posts

In a controversial move, Britain’s Labour Party has barred prominent left-winger Faiza Shaheen as a candidate in the upcoming election after allegations that she liked social media posts that raised questions about her suitability to run, particularly one that downplayed anti-Semitism.

Shaheen, who was set to run for the Chingford and Woodford Green seat in northeast London, was informed of her deselection by the party’s National Executive Committee after they questioned her about 14 social media posts. One post in particular, referencing a Jon Stewart sketch on freedom of expression in the Israel-Palestine conflict, sparked controversy.

The Jewish Labour Movement raised concerns about the tone of Shaheen’s social media posts, leading to her removal as a candidate. Shaheen responded by stating that she could not remember liking the post and apologized for any offense caused.

The Labour Muslim Network also criticized Shaheen’s deselection, calling it “unacceptable” and highlighting the issue of Islamophobia in the party.

This move comes amidst internal chaos within Labour over candidate selections for the upcoming election, with other left-wing candidates facing suspensions and doubts over their candidacy. Labour’s election campaign has been overshadowed by these controversies, leading to questions about whether the party is conducting a purge of left-wingers.

Labour’s Diane Abbott, Britain’s first Black female lawmaker, accused party leader Keir Starmer of conducting an “appalling” cull of left-wingers, further adding to the internal turmoil within the party.

Starmer, who took over from Jeremy Corbyn as party leader, has been cracking down on anti-Semitism within the party, following a report by the equalities watchdog that found serious failings in the party’s handling of the issue.

Corbyn himself has been barred from running as a Labour candidate after his comments on anti-Semitism, leading him to announce that he will run as an independent candidate in the upcoming election.

The deselection of Faiza Shaheen and the ongoing internal turmoil within Labour highlight the challenges the party faces as it prepares for the upcoming election on July 4th.
