Colombian Congress Passes Legislation Prohibiting Bullfighting in the Andes by 2027
In a historic move, the Colombian Congress has passed legislation banning bullfighting in the Andes region starting in 2027. This decision comes after years of campaigning by animal rights activists who have long argued that the practice is cruel and inhumane.
Bullfighting was introduced to Colombia during colonial times by the Spanish and quickly became a popular spectacle, drawing thousands of spectators to bullrings in cities like Bogotá, MedellÃn, and Manizales. However, the tide has now turned against this tradition, with President Gustavo Petro expected to sign the bill into law soon.
