Colombian Congress passes bill to ban bullfights by 2027

Colombian Congress Passes Legislation Prohibiting Bullfighting in the Andes by 2027

In a historic move, the Colombian Congress has passed legislation banning bullfighting in the Andes region starting in 2027. This decision comes after years of campaigning by animal rights activists who have long argued that the practice is cruel and inhumane.

Bullfighting was introduced to Colombia during colonial times by the Spanish and quickly became a popular spectacle, drawing thousands of spectators to bullrings in cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Manizales. However, the tide has now turned against this tradition, with President Gustavo Petro expected to sign the bill into law soon.

The president expressed his support for the ban, stating that “those who enjoy the death of animals will end up enjoying the death of human beings.” This sentiment reflects the growing global awareness of animal rights and the need to protect all living creatures from unnecessary harm.

While bullfighting supporters have protested the legislation, citing economic impacts on breeders and street vendors, the bill includes a three-year transition period to help those affected find alternative sources of income. Additionally, bullrings will be repurposed for cultural and sporting events in the future.

Colombia now joins other Latin American countries like Argentina, Cuba, and Uruguay in banning bullfighting, while some nations like Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela still allow the practice. Mexico City briefly banned bullfighting in 2022, only to reverse the decision two years later, leading to a resurgence in the controversial events.

Despite ongoing debates and cultural traditions, the global trend towards animal welfare and ethical treatment is clear. The Colombian ban on bullfighting marks a significant step towards a more compassionate society, where the rights and well-being of all creatures are valued and protected.
