In a bold move that has caught the attention of many, the Rev. Michael McBride has taken a stand against former President Donald J. Trump by leading an effort to indirectly help President Biden through the “Defeat by Truth” campaign. This campaign, spearheaded by progressive Black activists, strategists, and faith leaders, aims to combat misinformation and support progressive candidates in swing states.

Mr. McBride, a co-founder of the Black Church PAC, was an early advocate for a cease-fire in Gaza, breaking with President Biden’s support for the war months before many other Democrats. Despite his criticism of the administration’s stance on Israel, Mr. McBride is focused on defeating Trump, whom he sees as a greater threat.

The “Defeat by Truth” campaign operates as a political action committee, with supporters pledging to donate as little as one cent whenever Mr. Trump posts on social media, particularly on Truth Social. The funds raised will support a coalition of progressive organizations and aid candidates like Representatives Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, who have been vocal critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Mr. McBride emphasized that the campaign is not just about opposing Trump but also about promoting truth and combating hate speech and misinformation. The project builds on the success of the 2020 “Defeat by Tweet” campaign, which raised over $9 million.

Supporters of the effort include prominent figures like W. Kamau Bell, Tamika D. Mallory, and Philip Agnew, who believe in the power of grassroots activism to effect change. As Mr. McBride and his fellow organizers work to mobilize voters of color, especially in battleground states, they hope to make a lasting impact on the upcoming election.

Despite facing challenges with Black voters, Mr. McBride remains committed to the cause, urging his community to take action now rather than wait for the Biden administration to change its course. With the “Defeat by Truth” campaign, he and his supporters aim to harness the energy of grassroots activism to bring about positive change in a time of uncertainty and division.
