Famous Slovak TV presenter’s show canceled following warnings of ‘Orbanization’ – Euractiv

Slovak TV Station Markíza Faces Pressure Leading to Suspension of Political Show

Michal Kovačič, a prominent political moderator in Slovakia, has made shocking revelations about the pressures faced by journalists at the country’s largest TV station, Markíza. In a surprising turn of events, Kovačič’s TV show was immediately suspended after he spoke out against censorship efforts by both politicians and the station’s management.

Kovačič, known for hosting the popular Sunday political TV debate “Na telo,” accused Markíza of trying to censor his program and manipulate the news content. He highlighted the ongoing struggle within the station, where journalists are being pressured to conform to certain narratives pushed by politicians and the management.

The veteran journalist warned about the dangers of allowing such pressures to influence media reporting, stating that Slovakia is currently battling against the ‘Orbanisation’ of TV stations. He emphasized the importance of upholding journalistic integrity and protecting Slovak democracy from potential consequences.

Despite the show’s popularity and viewership, Markíza’s management decided to prematurely end “Na telo” this year, citing the need to find a more suitable format for the program. However, the immediate suspension of the show following Kovačič’s remarks has sparked controversy and raised concerns about censorship within the station.

In response to Kovačič’s allegations, Markíza denied any accusations of censorship and claimed that the suspension was due to the presenter violating media laws and ethical codes. The station’s PR manager defended their editorial process and independence, stating that they had supported the program despite challenges.

Kovačič’s colleagues at Markíza rallied behind him, demanding that the show be reinstated with him as the host. Nearly 100 employees expressed their support for Kovačič and criticized the management for succumbing to external pressures, calling the cancellation against the interests of the television.

The suspension of “Na telo” comes amidst a series of departures by other prominent Slovak presenters of political TV debates, raising concerns about the state of media freedom in the country. With politicians boycotting certain programs and calls for stricter media laws, the future of journalism in Slovakia remains uncertain.
