Handling Layoffs at Small Businesses: Tips for a Professional Approach

The Impact of Rising Costs: Layoffs at Small Businesses on the Rise

In a time of stubborn inflation and increasing costs, layoffs at small businesses have become a necessity. According to a report by global outplacement and business firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., U.S.-based employers announced 64,789 cuts in April, a 28% decrease from the 90,309 cuts announced in March.

Andrew Challenger, senior vice president at the firm, warned that more cuts may be on the horizon. “The labor market remains tight. But as labor costs continue to rise, companies will be slower to hire, and we expect further cuts will be needed,” he said. “This low April figure may be the calm before the storm.”

Handling layoffs in a professional manner is crucial. Employers must ensure they are complying with regulations related to layoffs, such as the federal WARN act, which requires a 60-day notice about planned closings or mass layoffs for employers with 100 or more employees. Some states have their own WARN acts with different rules.

Crafting a layoff plan is also essential. Employers should choose dates for the layoffs and notifications, send notifications to employees privately, and try to avoid multiple rounds of layoffs if possible. Clear communication about the reasons for the layoffs, updates on severance, unemployment benefits, and health insurance options like COBRA are also important. Employers may also consider offering to write a letter of recommendation for the affected employees.

As businesses navigate the challenges of rising costs and tough decisions, handling layoffs with professionalism and empathy is key to supporting both the company and its employees during difficult times.
