Partnership with Michigan Businesses to Strengthen Democracy and Engagement in Upcoming Election
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is teaming up with Michigan businesses to strengthen democracy and boost engagement in the upcoming election. The partnership with the Detroit Regional Chamber aims to encourage businesses to provide paid time off for employees to vote, promote serving as poll workers, and share accurate election information on their platforms.
Benson emphasized the importance of a healthy democracy for a healthy economy during a press briefing on Mackinac Island. The Detroit Regional Chamber, which includes a wide range of businesses in Southeast Michigan, is taking a stand to support democracy amidst a climate of polarization and misinformation.
The initiative also extends to national chains like McDonald’s to ensure workers have the opportunity to participate in the election. Benson, known for speaking out against disinformation campaigns, is working to engage workers at all levels in the democratic process.
Despite some past endorsements by the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Political Action Committee that raised concerns, Benson highlighted the chamber’s opposition to legislation that would restrict voting access. The focus remains on supporting democracy and ensuring all voices are heard in the electoral process.
A recent poll by the chamber revealed that a majority of Michigan voters are dissatisfied with the state of democracy in the U.S. Business leaders like Carla Walker-Miller are championing the cause of democracy, recognizing its importance for businesses and communities alike.
The “Michigan Business United for Elections Coalition” is gaining momentum, with a shared belief that democracy benefits everyone when all voices are represented in government. As the election approaches, the focus is on promoting engagement and ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral process.
