New UK defense minister promises continued support for Ukraine during visit to Odesa | Global News

New UK Defence Minister Pledges Fresh Ukraine Support in Odesa Trip

The UK’s new defence minister, John Healey, made a bold pledge during his visit to the southern city of Odesa in Ukraine. He vowed to deliver more artillery guns, ammunition, and missiles to support Kyiv in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Healey, who was appointed by new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, emphasized the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine despite the change in government. The visit to Odesa, a city frequently targeted by Russian attacks, marked Healey’s first international trip as defence minister.

The assistance package promised by Healey includes artillery guns, 250,000 rounds of ammunition, de-mining vehicles, small military boats, missiles, and other essential equipment. This support comes at a crucial time as Ukraine continues to defend itself against the Russian invasion.

During his visit, Healey met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, reaffirming London’s commitment to standing by Kyiv. Zelensky shared footage of Healey laying flowers at a memorial to commemorate Ukraine’s Navy Day, highlighting the solidarity between the two nations.

In addition to the UK’s support, the Netherlands’ Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp pledged to send F-16 fighter planes to Ukraine promptly. Healey also assured that a significant aid package announced in April would be delivered in full within the next 100 days, addressing concerns about delays in military supplies reaching Ukrainian forces.

The promise of increased support from the UK and other European allies underscores the international community’s determination to assist Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. As the conflict continues, the delivery of essential military equipment will play a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
