Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Bludgeoning Nancy Pelosi’s Husband Faces State Charges for Attempted Murder
The man who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for bludgeoning Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer inside their San Francisco home is now facing state charges, including attempted murder. David DePape, 44, was found guilty of attempting to hold Pelosi hostage and assaulting her husband, Paul Pelosi, after breaking into their home on Oct. 28, 2022.
In the state case, DePape has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, residential burglary, false imprisonment, and more. He pleaded not guilty to these charges. Opening statements for the state case began on Wednesday, following DePape’s federal sentencing.
District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley sentenced DePape to 20 years for attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and 30 years for assaulting Paul Pelosi, with the sentences running simultaneously. Corley reopened the sentencing portion of the trial to allow DePape to speak, after initially not giving him the opportunity to address the court.
During his federal trial, DePape admitted to planning to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and interrogate her, with intentions to harm her if she did not comply. The attack on Paul Pelosi, captured on police body camera video, left him with serious injuries including a skull fracture.
DePape’s defense attorneys argued for a shorter sentence, citing his difficult life circumstances and mental health issues. They also pointed to his involvement with conspiracy theories and extreme beliefs, influenced by his ex-girlfriend, Gypsy Taub.
Taub, a pro-nudity activist, met DePape when he was 20 years old and had a lasting impact on his beliefs and actions. DePape expressed remorse during his sentencing, stating that he never meant to harm Pelosi and should have left the house when he realized she was not there.
The case has sent shockwaves through the political world, highlighting the dangers of extreme beliefs and the impact they can have on individuals and their actions. As the trial continues, the full extent of DePape’s motives and intentions will be revealed, shedding light on a disturbing and tragic incident.
