The Winnipeg Jets made some big moves on the first day of NHL free agency, signing goaltenders Kaapo Kahkonen and Eric Comrie. Kahkonen, who played for both the New Jersey Devils and San Jose Sharks last season, signed a one-year contract with an average annual value of $1,000,000. Comrie, who played for the Buffalo Sabres, signed a two-year contract with an average annual value of $825,000. The Jets also re-signed defenseman Colin Miller to a two-year contract worth $1,500,000.
However, the Jets also lost four players to free agency. Sean Monahan signed a five-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Tyler Toffoli inked a four-year contract with the San Jose Sharks, Brenden Dillon signed a three-year deal with New Jersey, and Laurent Broissoit signed with the Chicago Blackhawks.
In other sports news, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed American receiver Kody Case after a tough loss to the Calgary Stampeders. The Bombers are currently 0-4 for the first time since 2012 and will look to turn things around in their next game against the Ottawa RedBlacks.
On the baseball front, Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Joey Matulovich was named the American Association’s Pitcher of the Month for June. Matulovich had an impressive month with a 3-1 record, a 1.59 ERA, and 48 strikeouts. He will look to continue his success as the Goldeyes take on the Explorers in Sioux City.
Lastly, Canada women’s soccer coach Bev Priestman announced her squad for this summer’s Paris Olympics. The team includes several players who have previously won gold and bronze medals in past Olympics, but Winnipeg’s Desiree Scott did not make the roster due to a knee injury. Scott has been a key player for Canada in past Olympics, helping the team win gold in Tokyo and bronze in London and Rio.
