2024 N.J. Primary Election: Essential Information

Important Deadlines for the Primary Election

The primary election season is in full swing, and New Jersey residents need to be aware of important deadlines to ensure their voices are heard. Here are some key dates to keep in mind:

– Voter registration: The deadline for voter registration was Tuesday, May 14. If you missed this deadline, you can check online to see if you are already registered.

– Mail ballot request: In-person requests for mail ballots must be made by 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. For qualified overseas civilians and military voters, the deadline is Friday, May 31.

– Mail ballot return: In-person returns must be made by Tuesday, June 4, while ballots sent by mail must be postmarked by the same date.

– Early voting: Early voting will be available from Wednesday, May 29, to Sunday, June 2. Registered voters can cast their ballots at their county board of elections offices.

It’s important to note that New Jersey has a closed primary system, meaning only Democrats and Republicans can vote for their party’s nominees. However, non-affiliated voters can still participate in local ballot questions.

If you still need to apply for a mail ballot, the deadline is Tuesday, May 28, for mail-in requests and 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, for in-person requests.

For military members, other uniformed services, and civilians living overseas, special provisions apply. They must be registered to vote in New Jersey and can obtain a ballot through a federal postcard application or state forms.

Overall, it’s crucial for New Jersey residents to be informed about these deadlines and requirements to ensure their participation in the upcoming primary election. Stay engaged and make your voice heard!
