New Analysis: Starting a Successful Podcast Side Hustle

Study Reveals Key Factors for Successful Podcasts and Listener Preferences

The podcasting industry is booming, with a new study by software company Podcastle revealing key insights into what makes a successful podcast. The study, which focused on the top podcasts in the U.S., found that profit is the main motivator for Americans looking to start a podcast, with some podcasters earning thousands of dollars a month through ads.

The study also uncovered common traits among top podcasts, such as the average length of 65 minutes and the most popular formats being interviews and deep topic explanations. The top genres include society and culture, comedy, true crime, news, education, business, health, improv, personal development, and documentary.

Additionally, the study found that successful podcasts have hosts who speak an average of 174 words per minute, with an average of 58 filler words per episode. Most top podcasts have more than one host and often feature guests. Cover art for these podcasts tends to use black and blue colors and rarely includes a picture of the host.

In terms of listeners, the study revealed that podcast listeners have increased by nearly 70% since 2019, with most tuning in on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Listeners are drawn to podcasts that are entertaining, offer new information, and feature hosts with expertise in a certain topic. However, too many ads and poor audio quality are major turn-offs for listeners.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights for both new and seasoned podcasters looking to create a successful show in the $25 billion podcasting industry.
