Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeats Magnus Carlsen in Norway Chess Tournament

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa made headlines in the chess world by claiming his first-ever classical game victory over the reigning world number one Magnus Carlsen. The 18-year-old prodigy took the lead in the prestigious Norway Chess tournament after three rounds, showcasing his exceptional skills on the board.

Praggnanandhaa, who has previously defeated Carlsen in rapid/exhibition games, played with white pieces and outmaneuvered the Norwegian champion to secure the top spot with 5.5 points. This victory pushed Carlsen down to the fifth position in the points table, surprising many chess enthusiasts around the globe.

Classical chess, also known as slow chess, allows players ample time to strategize and make their moves, adding an extra layer of complexity to the game. Praggnanandhaa’s triumph over Carlsen in this format marks a significant milestone in his career and solidifies his position as a formidable contender in the chess world.

In the women’s competition, Praggnanandhaa’s sister R Vaishali also shined by holding the top spot with 5.5 points after drawing her game against Anna Muzychuk. The siblings’ success in the tournament highlights the growing talent pool in Indian chess and their potential to make a mark on the international stage.

In other matches, world number two Fabiano Caruana of the USA defeated reigning world champion Ding Liren of China, causing a shift in the standings. American Hikaru Nakamura’s victory in the Armageddon game against Alireza Firouzja of France earned him an extra half point, placing him third in the rankings.

The upcoming fourth round of the tournament promises an exciting showdown between Nakamura and Praggnanandhaa, setting the stage for a thrilling battle of wits on the chessboard. As the competition heats up, fans eagerly anticipate more surprises and upsets in one of the most prestigious chess events of the year.
