Severe Storms Expected Today, Relief in Sight Mid-Week

As the day begins with storms moving out, the forecast for today includes hot and humid conditions with temperatures reaching into the 80s and 90s. The high humidity will make it feel even hotter, with heat index values near 100. A cold front is expected to sweep through in the afternoon, triggering more storms after 4-5 pm. Some of these storms may be strong to severe, especially in areas near and south of Highway 30.

The main threats from these storms will be strong winds, hail, and heavy rain, with the possibility of an elevated tornado threat if storms develop early. The storm activity is expected to continue through the night, with the highest impact likely between 2-3 am.

Looking ahead to Wednesday and Thursday, there will be some relief from the heat and humidity as temperatures drop into the low 80s. The lower humidity levels will make it more comfortable to be outside, with plenty of sunshine expected on both days.

However, the warmth and moisture will return as we head into the weekend. A warm front lifting north on Thursday night will bring back the higher temperatures and humidity, with widespread showers and storms expected on Friday. The heavy rain could have an impact on river levels, especially as the Cedar River crests this week and the Mississippi crests over the weekend.

By Saturday, the rain should start to clear out, with drier air moving in and temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. Sunday will see temperatures in the upper 70s under sunny skies, with lower humidity making for a pleasant end to the weekend.
