Trial Update: Woman Accused of Striking Boston Police Officer Boyfriend with SUV Heads into Fifth Week
The highly publicized trial in Massachusetts involving Karen Read, who is accused of striking her Boston police officer boyfriend with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a snowbank, entered its fourth week on Friday. John O’Keefe, 46, tragically died in Canton on Jan. 29, 2022, and Read, 44, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges.
The prosecution has presented witnesses who claim Read admitted to hitting O’Keefe and highlighted the tumultuous nature of their relationship. Testimonies from two sisters who vacationed with Read and O’Keefe in Aruba revealed arguments and accusations of infidelity. Additionally, a federal agent testified about flirtatious texts exchanged with Read, suggesting a deteriorating relationship with O’Keefe.
On the other hand, the defense has alleged that O’Keefe was beaten inside a home, bitten by a dog, and then left outside. They argue that investigators focused on Read as a convenient suspect, ignoring other potential culprits. The defense has implicated several individuals, including Brian Higgins and Brian Albert, in a possible cover-up.
The trial will resume next week, with the defense expected to conclude their cross-examination of Higgins. The case has captivated the public with its twists and turns, leaving many questioning the true nature of the events leading to O’Keefe’s tragic death.
