Sports News Update: Mariners face Tampa Bay Rays, Panthers win Stanley Cup, Seahawks training camp registration open, Washington State names new athletic director

The Seattle Mariners are looking to bounce back tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays after a heartbreaking late-game defeat. The Mariners were leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning last night when the Rays mounted a comeback, scoring three runs off reliever Austin Voth to steal the win.

Despite the loss, Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver each hit a home run for Seattle. However, the team faced another setback as Bryan Woo left the game in the fourth inning with right hamstring tightness. An MRI today revealed the extent of the injury, leading the team to place him on the 15-day injured list.

This is just the latest setback for Woo, who has had a stellar season after initially being sidelined with elbow inflammation. The Mariners will be counting on Luis Castillo to lead them to victory in the second game of their three-game series against the Rays, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:50 on KPUG.

In other sports news, the Florida Panthers secured their first Stanley Cup in franchise history by defeating the Edmonton Oilers 2-1. Carter Verhaeghe played a crucial role in the victory, scoring a goal and assisting on another to help the Panthers avoid a collapse after starting the series with a 3-0 lead. Despite the loss, Connor McDavid of the Oilers was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP.

Additionally, registration is now open for the Seattle Seahawks’ summer training camps, which are open to fans. The camps will take place at the team’s headquarters in Renton between July 24 and August 8, with opportunities for fans to interact with players, coaches, and legends of the team.

Lastly, Washington State University has named Anne McCoy as their new athletic director after she held the interim role for the past three months. McCoy, who has been with the university since 2001, will be tasked with leading the Cougars through an uncertain future as they navigate their affiliation with the Mountain West Conference. Both Washington State and Oregon State are the only remaining members of the Pac-12 Conference and will compete as affiliate members in several sports this upcoming season.
