Latest Sports News: Mariners Win Opener, Kraken Name New Head Coach, WWU Softball Finishes Second, Birch Equipment Wins Ski to Sea, Prep Sports Postseason Update, Basketball Legend Bill Walton Passes Away

The Seattle Mariners are back home today for the second game of their series against the Houston Astros, following a thrilling 3-2 victory in the opener. Julio Rodriguez continued his hot hitting streak with a 2-4 performance, including a run and two stolen bases. The Mariners’ pitcher Bryce Miller also had a strong outing, giving up only two runs over six innings to secure his first win in over a month.

However, it wasn’t all good news for the Mariners as they placed second baseman Jorge Polanco on the 10-day injured list due to tightness in his right hamstring. The team expects him to miss about two weeks. Despite this setback, the Mariners are looking to extend their winning streak to three games with Luis Castillo on the mound for tonight’s matchup.

In other sports news, the Seattle Kraken have named Dan Bylsma as their new head coach. Bylsma, who previously coached in the NHL with Pittsburgh and Buffalo, has been leading the Coachella Valley Firebirds to success in the AHL. He replaces Dave Hakstol, who was let go after a disappointing season for the Kraken.

Additionally, WWU’s softball team finished their historic season with a second-place finish at nationals, while Birch Equipment claimed their third consecutive victory at the Ski to Sea relay race. In prep sports, Sehome boys soccer finished as runners-up in the 2A state tournament, and Meridian and Lynden had strong showings in the baseball playoffs.

Sadly, basketball legend Bill Walton has passed away at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. Walton, known for his success on the court and as a colorful TV analyst, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of sports.
