Key Points Ahead of NZR Special General Meeting: Rugby Governance Battle, Auckland Stadium Plan, and Auckland FC Signings

The rugby world in New Zealand is on the edge of its seat as the most important meeting in the game’s professional history looms ahead. The New Zealand Rugby (NZR) will hold a special general meeting (SGM) to vote on their governance structure in response to last year’s Pilkington Review, which found the current model not fit for purpose.

The sides in this civil war are clearly divided. On one side, we have the New Zealand Rugby Players’ Association (NZRPA), most of the NZR board, Super Rugby Pacific clubs, New Zealand Rugby Commercial (NZRC), New Zealand Māori Rugby Board, and some provincial unions supporting the review proposal. They are advocating for a nine-person board of independent directors appointed by a truly independent panel to improve decision-making at all levels of the game.

On the other side, a cohort of provincial unions led by Auckland, North Harbour, Wellington, Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, Northland, and Bay of Plenty are pushing for Proposal 2, which requires at least three of the nine directors to have experience serving on a provincial board.

Despite past conflicts over the Silver Lake deal, NZR and the NZRPA are now on the same side, supporting the review proposal. The players have no intention of striking and will meet all their commitments as usual.

The crucial vote is scheduled for Thursday morning, with 90 votes to be cast by secret ballot. The results are expected to be made public at 10:30 am. If Proposal 2 is successful, the unions will have three months to implement it and appoint the new board.

The outcome of this vote will have far-reaching implications for the future of rugby governance in New Zealand. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
