Flaws in Screen Set Up Preventing Tourists from Taking Pictures of Mount Fuji | Travel

Japanese Town’s Attempt to Block Tourists from Photographing Mount Fuji Backfires as Holes Discovered in Screen

The picturesque town of Fujikawaguchiko in Japan, known for its stunning views of Mount Fuji, recently made headlines for an unusual reason. Last week, the town authorities erected a massive black screen in an attempt to deter tourists from overcrowding the area and snapping photos of the iconic mountain. However, their efforts were thwarted when officials discovered multiple holes in the screen, strategically placed at eye level to accommodate camera lenses.

The screen, measuring 2.5 meters high and stretching 20 meters, was installed at a cost of 1.3 million yen ($8,285) to alleviate congestion in popular viewing spots. One such location outside a Lawson convenience store offered a unique angle that made it appear as though Mount Fuji was perched atop the store roof, attracting hordes of visitors.

Local residents had raised concerns about tourists blocking sidewalks, wandering onto busy roads, and encroaching on private properties to capture the perfect shot. The holes in the screen only exacerbated the situation, prompting officials to take swift action to repair the damage.

Over-tourism has become a pressing issue in various tourist hotspots across Japan, including Kyoto and Kamakura. To manage the influx of visitors, new regulations have been implemented for climbers on Mount Fuji’s Yoshida Trail, requiring them to book slots and pay a fee during the climbing season from July 1 to September 10.

Despite the setbacks with the screen, officials remain optimistic that the measures taken will help maintain the beauty and tranquility of the area for both residents and visitors alike. As the town continues to address the challenges posed by tourism, the allure of Mount Fuji remains undiminished, drawing travelers from around the world to witness its majestic beauty.
