Revival of Wire Baskets: A Boon for Roadside Basket-Makers

The resurgence of wire baskets as a fashion statement has not only caught the eye of trendsetters but has also provided a much-needed source of income for roadside basket-makers. Indrani, fondly known as Indrani Paati, has been weaving baskets on Five Furlong Road in Guindy for six years now. Previously a flower-vendor, she switched to basket-weaving to support herself, selling her creations for prices ranging from ₹120 to ₹600.

Another inspiring story is that of Ramya U., a differently abled vendor at the Agaram junction, who has been crafting wire baskets for five years. Despite the challenges she faces, Ramya finds satisfaction in creating unique designs, such as the Nellikai koodai (Amala-knot baskets). She has seen an increase in sales recently, thanks to her dedication to experimenting with new color combinations and patterns.

Both Indrani and Ramya dedicate most of their day to weaving baskets, with each piece taking hours to complete. While Indrani produces two small baskets a day, she eagerly anticipates larger orders for events like weddings. Both women share a common belief that the time and effort they invest in their craft is a testament to their determination to support their families.

As these handmade wire baskets continue to gain popularity as trendy accessories, Indrani and Ramya remain committed to their craft, knowing that the timeless charm of creating something by hand will always endure, regardless of changing trends.
