On this day in 1973, Alabama experienced a devastating outbreak of tornadoes that left a trail of destruction in its wake. A violent, long track F4 tornado touched down northeast of Demopolis and wreaked havoc as it traveled northeastward, causing widespread damage in towns such as Greensboro, Brent, Centreville, Montevallo, and many others.

In Greensboro, 72 people were injured and tragically, one person lost their life. The town of Brent in Bibb County suffered immense devastation, with 90% of the town destroyed, resulting in the loss of 5 lives and injuries to 56 individuals. The tornado also caused destruction to buildings, mobile homes, businesses, and over 12,000 acres of timber in its path.

Additionally, an F3 tornado struck areas along a path from Tarrant to Gadsden, causing heavy damage in Center Point where numerous homes were destroyed and over 300 homes were damaged. Tragically, one person lost their life in this tornado.

The severe weather event on this date in 1973 serves as a reminder of the destructive power of tornadoes and the importance of being prepared for severe weather.
