DUP steps down in Fermanagh and South Tyrone

DUP Leader Gavin Robinson Announces Party’s Decision Not to Stand in Fermanagh and South Tyrone

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has made a surprising announcement ahead of the upcoming election, revealing that they will not stand in the Fermanagh and South Tyrone constituency. Instead, they are throwing their support behind the Ulster Unionist candidate, Diana Armstrong.

This decision was confirmed by Gavin Robinson, the newly ratified leader of the DUP. The party’s move to back the UUP candidate comes after the resignation of former leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, who stepped down amidst charges of rape and other historical sex offenses.

In a bid to secure the seat for a unionist candidate, the DUP has opted not to field a candidate in Fermanagh and South Tyrone, urging all unionists in the constituency to vote for Diana Armstrong. This strategic decision follows a similar move in 2019, when Sinn Féin narrowly held onto the seat by just 57 votes, marking the smallest margin of victory in that election.

Mr. Robinson expressed his enthusiasm for leading the DUP into the election with “energy and purpose,” emphasizing the party’s commitment to advocating for Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom. He called on unionist voters to set aside internal debates and unite in maximizing unionist representation at Westminster.

With the DUP currently holding seven seats in Northern Ireland, down from eight following Sir Jeffrey’s suspension, the party’s endorsement of the UUP candidate in Fermanagh and South Tyrone adds an intriguing twist to the upcoming election. Stay tuned for more updates as the campaign unfolds.
