Laguna Football: A 90-Year Sports Update

Celebrating 90 Years of High School Football: Eight Weeks to Go Until 2024 Season

As the 2024 high school football season approaches, Laguna Beach High School is gearing up to celebrate 90 years of football history. The school, which opened its doors in 1934 with just 157 students, has a rich tradition of football that dates back to its inaugural season.

The first football season in 1934 saw the team play against mostly junior varsity teams, with three games against varsity teams. The team did not adopt the nickname “Breakers” until December 1934, and the name “Artists” was used from 1936 to 2002 before returning to the Breaker moniker in 2003.

The team’s first uniforms consisted of white jerseys, khaki pants, and shoulder guards, showcasing the simplicity of the early days of high school football. The tentative opening lineup in 1934 included players like Bob Jones, John Lawrence, and George Warboys.

The team’s first home game in 1934 against San Juan Capistrano High School marked a historic moment for the school, with Laguna winning 7-0. The game was considered the first homecoming, although formal homecoming traditions were not established until later years.

In addition to celebrating its football history, the Laguna Beach High School football squad is set to travel to Japan for a special event. Former Magnolia head coach Ryan Olson is on the staff, and summer practice will continue after the team returns from Japan.

With just eight weeks to go until the start of the 2024 season, the Laguna Beach High School football team is looking forward to honoring its past while preparing for the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey to Japan and their return for fall practice.
