Global IT Outage Hits Major Institutions and Services
Mass IT Outage Hits Global Institutions, Banks, and Airlines
On July 19, 2024, a widespread IT outage has affected a multitude of global institutions, major banks, media outlets, and airlines, causing chaos and disruption in various sectors. The US state of Alaska has issued warnings that its emergency services are impacted, while reports have surfaced of the London Stock Exchange being affected.
Australia, in particular, has been hit hard by the outage, with flights grounded, supermarkets experiencing checkout chaos, and broadcast networks left scrambling on air as autocue, graphics, and computers failed. The cause of the outage remains unclear, but many affected parties have pointed fingers at Microsoft PC operating systems.
An official Microsoft 365 service update earlier in the day acknowledged the issue, stating that they were investigating an issue impacting users’ ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services. However, a Microsoft spokesperson later mentioned that the majority of services had been restored.
According to a spokesperson for Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, the outage may be related to an issue at global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, although the country’s cybersecurity watchdog has stated that there is no evidence to suggest it was an attack.
Reports from Reuters indicate that the London Stock Exchange has experienced an outage, while Alaskan officials have noted that many 911 and non-emergency call centers are not functioning properly. At Sydney Airport, departure boards lost information, and budget carrier Jetstar informed passengers of issues with Microsoft preventing check-ins and boarding of flights.
Social media users have also reported long queues at stores like Woolworths, with payment systems down. The Australian outage website Downdetector shows problems being reported by the National Australia Bank, telecom firm Telstra, Google, and more.
The widespread IT outage has caused significant disruptions across various industries, highlighting the interconnected nature of modern technology and the potential vulnerabilities that come with it. As affected parties work to restore services and investigate the root cause of the issue, the impact of the outage continues to ripple through global networks.
