NIA chargesheets seven more accused in Attari drug haul case, over 100 kg heroin seized
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made significant progress in the Attari drug haul case, with the recent chargesheeting of seven more accused in the case. This case, which involved the seizure of over 100 kg of heroin valued at over ₹700 crore from the Integrated Check Post in April 2022, has been a major focus of the NIA’s investigations.
The supplementary chargesheet filed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act identified the seven accused as key operatives of an international syndicate involved in smuggling drugs into India and distributing them across the country. These individuals, including Athar Saeed, Amritpal Singh, Avtar Singh, Harwinder Singh, Tahseem, Deepak Khurana, and Ahmad Farid, were also responsible for channelizing the proceeds of the crime to the main accused based abroad.
The initial seizure of heroin in April 2022 was a result of the Indian customs department’s vigilance, which uncovered the drugs concealed in a consignment of licorice roots. The investigation revealed that the drugs had been smuggled into the country by an Afghan national on the directions of a Dubai-based accused, with plans to distribute them through various channels.
The NIA’s thorough investigation has led to the chargesheeting of all individuals involved in the case, including those responsible for the smuggling operation and the distribution network. With the recovery of significant proceeds of the crime and the arrest of key players, the NIA is making strides in dismantling the drug syndicate operating in the region.
The Attari drug haul case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by drug trafficking and the importance of coordinated efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat this illicit trade. The NIA’s relentless pursuit of justice in this case is a testament to their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the citizens from the scourge of drugs.
