Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez: “Establishment of Palestinian State is the Only Route to Peace”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has made a bold statement, declaring that the establishment of a Palestinian state is “the only route to peace” in the Middle East. This announcement comes as Spain, alongside Norway and Ireland, formally recognizes Palestine as a state.
Sanchez emphasized the importance of this decision, stating that it is a matter of historical justice and a step towards helping Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace. The Spanish government’s recognition comes with a commitment to not acknowledge any changes to pre-1967 borders unless agreed upon by both parties.
Norway and Ireland have also followed suit in recognizing Palestine, with Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide calling it a milestone in their relationship with Palestine. Ireland’s cabinet approved formal recognition shortly after the Palestinian flag was raised in Dublin.
However, these announcements have not been well-received by Israel, with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz accusing Sanchez of being a “partner to incitement” of Jewish “genocide.” The tension between Israel and some European Union states has escalated over the ongoing war in Gaza.
Despite the backlash, Palestine has already been recognized by 144 other countries, and several EU members have also recognized a Palestinian state. The United Kingdom and Australia are considering recognition, while France has stated that now is not the time. Germany, along with the United States, has rejected a unilateral approach, emphasizing the need for a two-state solution through dialogue.
The establishment of a Palestinian state has sparked both support and controversy, highlighting the complexities of the Middle East conflict and the differing perspectives on how to achieve lasting peace in the region.
