‘Just Cause’ Film in Development by ‘Blue Beetle’ Director for Universal

Universal Pictures Acquires Video Game Franchise Just Cause for Adaptation with Director Ángel Manuel Soto

Universal Pictures has announced a new exciting project in the works – a film adaptation of the hit video game franchise, “Just Cause.” The adaptation will be helmed by Ángel Manuel Soto, known for his work on “Blue Beetle.”

The producing duo behind Universal’s “The Fall Guy” and “Nobody,” Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North, will be producing the film. Additionally, Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen are also on board as producers.

“Just Cause” follows the story of Rico Rodriguez, an operative on deadly missions to stop The Black Hand, a lethal mercenary group. The video game franchise, which debuted in 2006, has been a fan favorite for its action-packed gameplay and thrilling storyline.

Universal Pictures sees the adaptation as part of the rising trend of successful video game adaptations in the film industry. With hits like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” grossing over $1.4 billion and $290 million respectively in the global box office in 2023, the studio is eager to bring “Just Cause” to the big screen.

Ángel Manuel Soto, who made waves with “Blue Beetle,” the first major superhero movie centered on a Latino hero, is set to direct the adaptation. Soto is also working on other projects, including the action movie “The Wrecking Crew” for Amazon MGM and a “Transformers” spinoff for Paramount.

Fans of the “Just Cause” video game franchise can look forward to seeing their favorite character, Rico Rodriguez, come to life on the big screen in this highly anticipated adaptation.
