The pound hits highest level against the dollar in a year

The pound surged to its highest level against the dollar in a year on Wednesday, driven by investor optimism about UK interest rates remaining elevated. This comes as new data revealed that inflation in the UK is proving to be more persistent than anticipated, leading traders to scale back expectations of a rate cut in August.

The pound surpassed $1.30 for the first time since last July, buoyed by market confidence in the economic stability promised by the new Labour government. Higher interest rates in the UK attract foreign investment, increasing demand for the pound and pushing up its value relative to other currencies.

While UK inflation held steady at the Bank of England’s target rate of 2% in June, underlying measures such as services sector inflation at 5.7% and core inflation at 3.5% remain elevated. This contrasts with central banks in other countries like Switzerland, Sweden, and Canada, which have already implemented rate cuts.

Despite the pound’s rally, some analysts like Kit Juckes of Societe Generale are skeptical about its sustainability. Global uncertainties, including a hung parliament in France and political turmoil in the US, have added to market jitters. However, the stability offered by the new UK government has provided some support for the pound.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plans to boost the economy with infrastructure projects and new homes, outlined in King Charles’s speech on Wednesday, have also contributed to the pound’s strength. Emma Wall of Hargreaves Lansdown emphasized the importance of ongoing economic data and the Bank of England’s upcoming interest rate decision on August 1 in sustaining the pound’s rally.
